How does it work?
We bring a device, containing an electromagnetic coil, close to your scalp.
With it we emit electromagnetic pulses (without pain or discomfort).
These pulses stimulate neurons in your brain that control a certain activity.
Symptom relief may come after a few weeks of treatment.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
EMT therapy
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique with more than twenty years of clinical experience that has proven to be effective in the treatment of various mental disorders, such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks and other conditions.
The mechanism of action of TMS involves direct stimulation of specific regions of the cerebral cortex, such as the prefrontal cortex, using electrical energy to generate a powerful magnetic field through a stimulation coil. During the treatment session, this magnetic field is applied to the patient's head, transferring energy to the brain painlessly and without the need for sedation.
Magnetic energy easily passes through the skin and skull, activating specific brain areas and modifying neuronal activity, as well as the metabolism of neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin.
TMS stands out for being a safe, effective and easy to apply technique, with few side effects. It is especially useful for those patients who have not responded to other treatments, have intolerance to drugs, or as a complement to pharmacological treatment in cases of resistant disorders.
Does EMT work?
Our scientific findings indicate that, on average, after approximately 10 sessions, most patients experience partial or complete remission of symptoms. However, it is important to keep in mind that treatment may not be effective or appropriate for all patients, so an initial evaluation is crucial.
Is it really that effective?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) shows its efficacy when a thorough evaluation of each individual is performed. In addition, it has been observed that its effectiveness is enhanced when combined with psychotherapy, lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication.
How many sessions do I need?
On average, our patients usually require about 10 sessions. To achieve optimal results, it is recommended that treatment sessions be performed 2 to 3 times per week.
Typically, many patients experience noticeable improvements in their condition after completing 4 to 6 treatment sessions.
Is EMT painful?
People receiving Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) often describe the magnetic pulses as irritating, but not painful. Over the course of several sessions, patients tend to adapt to this sensation and find it less bothersome.
Does EMT really have a long-term effect?
The effects of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) usually last 9 to 12 months for most people; some choose to return for follow-up sessions once a month or every 2 to 3 months to maintain the benefits obtained and prevent relapse.
Research studies have shown that after six months, depressive symptoms tend to be significantly lower compared to the start of treatment. This suggests a sustained improvement in mood and supports the long-term effectiveness of TMS in the management of depression.
How is TMS different from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)?
In contrast to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) does not require hospitalization and generally has less severe side effects.
ECT involves the distribution of electrical currents throughout the brain, which carries a higher risk of memory loss. In contrast, TMS focuses on specific areas of the brain, which significantly reduces the possibility of serious side effects and offers a more targeted approach to treatment.
What is the difference between EMT and Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback has been extensively studied in the treatment of ADHD, sleep disorders and epilepsy, however, there is a lack of controlled research on its effectiveness in the treatment of depression. On the other handOn the other hand, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been extensively investigated in the treatment of depression and, as a result, is considered to have a greater likelihood of success in the treatment of this condition.
Who can receive EMT treatment?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS) is recommended for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adult patients who have not experienced satisfactory improvement with previous antidepressant medication during the current episode.
Your physician will evaluate various factors, such as medication dosing records and depression scores, among others, to determine if you are a suitable candidate for TMS Therapy at Neurowave.
Who qualifies for EMT?
TMS can be considered for any individual with a diagnosis of depression or anxiety. However, there are some important contraindications:
It is not recommended for people who have pacemakers or metallic implants in the skull.
-It is also not advisable in cases of uncontrolled epilepsy.
When is its application indicated?
Patients who have been diagnosed with:
- Depression
- Dysthymia
- Anxiety Disorder
- OCD
- Post-traumatic Stress
- Other Disorders
How can I receive treatment by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
Treatment can be prescribed by any physician or therapist, however, an initial evaluation by a Neurowave psychiatrist is required prior to beginning treatment.
This evaluation guarantees a personalized and adequate attention to the individual needs of each patient.
Is any preparation necessary to receive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
No special preparation is required.
In which age group can it be used?
Patients must be 18 years of age or older to receive treatment. In the case of adolescents, it is necessary that they be referred by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, and that the parents or guardians sign the informed consent before starting any intervention.
Who applies it?
Treatment is carried out by a psychiatrist or a mental health professional with specialized training in this technique.
In the specific case of Neurowave, Dr. Jose Ramon Grajales is the specialist in charge of administering this treatment. Dr. Grajales is a Surgeon graduated from the University of Guanajuato, with a specialization in Psychiatry from the UNAM, and has completed a Fellowship in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at Duke University.
His extensive experience and training guarantee the provision of high quality and safe treatment for our patients.
How does the EMT feel?
The magnetic coil used to administer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is positioned on the left frontal side of the head, over the region of the brain known as the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
During the procedure, it is possible to hear a clicking sound and experience a tapping sensation in the head while the magnetic pulses are applied. Many patients find that they are able to perform activities such as watching television or reading during the treatment.
How long does TMS therapy last?
EMT therapy has a duration of 29 to 33 minutes. One treatment is administered per day, two to three times per week, for a period of 4-6 weeks.
Should I stop taking antidepressants?
If you are contemplating gradually reducing the intake of antidepressant medications, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a recommended treatment during this process to prevent possible relapses.
It is not mandatory to completely discontinue medication before starting TMS treatment, and antidepressant medications can still be continued throughout the treatment period. However, any adjustments in medication should be made in consultation with your prescribing physician or psychiatrist to ensure a safe and effective transition.
Do I need follow-up treatment?
You should discuss long-term treatment planning with your physician, including maintenance treatment.

Do I have to be accompanied to the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation sessions?
It is not mandatory, unless it is necessary for some other reason. The patient is admitted and discharged under the same conditions.
Side Effects
Are there any side effects of TMS therapy?
The treatment does not usually cause the common side effects associated with antidepressants.
Some patients may experience slight discomfort or headache, but are usually able to resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. However, it is important to keep in mind that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a medical procedure, so any side effects experienced during or after treatment should be reported to your physician.

Can I drive myself home after treatment?
TMS does not affect your ability to drive. However, the experience of intensive treatment can be exhausting.
If you do not feel comfortable driving after this experience, we recommend that you ask a friend to drive you home after a treatment session.
